Bird Avoidance Model, New Mexico

Project Objective

The client had a need to determine the seasonal occurrences of birds to avoid the risk of Bird Air Strike Hazard (BASH). Bird-aircraft strikes constitute a safety concern for the Air Force since they can result in damage to aircraft or injury to aircrews or local human populations if an aircraft crashes. The objective of this research was to focus on the potential for bird strikes.

Scope of Services

  • In collaboration with Professors from Sam Houston University, Tessellations conducted a research to study the migratory and flying patterns of birds,
  • Study other factors such as Lake Holloman and the Holloman AFB Wetlands Complex which are close to the migratory flyway. This wetland complex receive discharges of treated effluent from the a waste water treatment plant which attracts many waterfowl and shorebirds and thus contribute to potential bird strikes,
  • Developing a probabilistic model using all the risk factors,
  • Visualization on GIS platform.

Notable Accomplishments

  • Model was utilized for computing whether any potential exists for greater BASH within the airspace. The results were used for special briefing provided to pilots for managing their local flying procedures and to avoid direct overflight of these risk areas.
